Pro Walk Pro Bike Pro Bridge – Part 2: The Shady-Liberty Bridge

Part 2 of the series leading to next week’s Pro Walk Pro Bike Pro Place 2014 highlights a recent success: the Shady-Liberty Pedestrian Bridge.

The bridge links Shady Side and East Liberty across the Main Line corridor in Pittsburgh’s East End.  (Nowadays the corridor contains the Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway, Norfolk Southern freight lines, and Amtrak’s Pennsylvanian).

Artist Sheila Klein has done wonders to what would have otherwise been an aesthetically mundane overpass (consisting of welded plate girders).  The artist made creative use of the tall security fences, typically required by Norfolk Southern (page 17 of PDF).

Opened in 2012, the structure is a convenient and well-used link for cyclists and pedestrians.  However it is late and I must defer to The Pittsburgh Mommy’s elaborate post regarding this site.
